There’s been this picture going on of what the earth would look like without oceans, except it isn’t true. The picture is actually a map of the earth’s gravity. Blue is lower gravity, orange is higher. Guess which spot has the lowest gravity in the world, by far? It’s Sri Lanka.
What this image shows is the density of whatever is under the earth and how that affects gravity. Because our earth isn’t a uniform thing underneath. So apparently whatever is going on under Sri Lanka isn’t that dense.
These are actually few implications of this, however. The gravity difference, as you may have noticed, are imperceptible. They can only be detected by two satellites that can detect hair’s breadth changes between themselves. This wonderful looking map has few applications.
You could say that this makes Sri Lanka the idea candidate for a space elevator, but not really. Being near the equator and the adopted home of Arthur C. Clarke are good for that proposition, but you could say that Singapore might be better suited to actually do it.
As it is it’s just a cool map and a rare opportunity to say we’re #1. Fuck gravity!
Nice!
You need to be right on the equator for a space elevator. Clarke took some liberties in the Foutains of Paradise (which he admitted to), for the sake of a cool story.
Also, I can’t spell “Fountain”.
Lol. No wonder Sri Lankan’s are happier. We don’t have the weight of the rest of the world.
Gives a whole new meaning to the term ” Sri Lankans are a down to earth kind of people” ;)
What caught my attention was:
> So apparently whatever is going on under Sri Lanka isn’t that *dense*.
I guess what’s on top makes up for that ;-)
Another No #1 spot to SL. Hmmm
Down under is no more Australia I say!! :)
our cricketers are being trained in SL with low gravity. Does it mean that they cannot perform well abroad?
Sri Lanka is also at a amphidromic point/tidal node.
That is the tide revolves round us.
In most other countries the tide will change every day and the height too (3-12 feet on average). So before you go out to sea, need to check tide chart for low and high tide times.
In Sri Lanka the time of high tide (වඩ දිය) and low tide (බා දිය) changes very little. To make things even better we have very little difference in height between low and high tide. The difference in tide height is about 0.5 m (1.5 feet) in Sri Lanka.
The reason is that Sri Lanka is one of a few tidal node or amphidromic point. That is center point around which the tides rotate. Think of a string you whirl around while moving it very slightly up and down with your hand. There will be almost no up down (vertical) movement near your hand. At the end of the sting there is a big up down (vertical) movement. The amphidromic point will be your hand, the center of rotation.

That’s why sri Lanka is so special
Actually, they say people in Iceland are some of the happiest and they have close to the highest gravity of any place. But I will say this: the art and culture of Sri Lanka as well as south india is some of the most beautiful. And, I think they do have a space program there, so it makes sense. I haven’t really heard about iceland going into space either.
Good
Good
Budun upan heladiva- this is the reason
Lowest Gravity = Lowest Grade Politicians = Sri Lanka.
That means Sri Lanka in Danger. With the Sri Lankan economy, we cannot travel the space. So I guess Sri Lanka have to be careful when they make political agreements with other Rich Countries. Sooner they will need Sri Lanka to travel space.
ancient sri lanka was wounder of world with innovative people and creativity and their capabilities in engineering , agriculture , architecture etc… but our wrong politician have made us cannibals , now we have a low gravity
