Recently there was a terrible accident in Minuwangoda, near Gampaha. A PSD (President’s Security) Defender overtook on a solid line and ran straight into a bus. The jeep was basically obliterated, killing everyone inside. Six others were injured, one seriously. It’s a terrible accident and a terrible loss of life. And part of an avoidable problem.
People in Defenders generally drive like assholes. The staff of public servants behave like they own the roads and everyone else needs to get to the side. It’s honestly like the colonial days when we had to jump in the ditch for our masters. Except the new ones are driving tanks at 100 KPH. And they’re not our masters.
At the very least, this new government should start obeying traffic rules. Every state vehicle should have a ‘How’s My Driving’ sticker and we should be able to report any of them. These vehicles, after all, belong to us and are only loaned our for temporary custodians of power.
Honestly, this isn’t the war era when politicians had a legitimately high mortality rate. There is not so much to defend from. This is a time where we can reset political culture, and it can start in how public servants behave in public spaces. They can start by driving better.
