UPDATE: He’s been arrested.
Sigh. Someone needs to tell thuggish UNPers like MP Palitha Thewarapperuma that we’re in a national government and our President is Chairman of the SLFP. In the video here, Thewarapperuma is making someone kneel as his supporters assault him. According to SLFP MPs speaking to NewsFirst, Thewarapperuma basically led a mob, throwing rotten eggs (I’ve always wondered how you find the rotten ones) and assaulting a Pradeshiya Sabha member. To quote the meme going around, not yahapalayana (good governance).
According to Mahinda Samarasinghe in Ceylon Today, the President and PM were notified and the police took steps to limit the unrest. Still, they should show that justice applies to everyone. Especially in a unity government, there can be no acts of revenge or humiliation. For at least 100 days everyone has to get together to fix the constitution of this country, and thuggish behavior needs to be disciplined, wherever it comes from.
One of the few blemishes on President Maithripala’s character is that he bailed out his son when he drunkenly assaulted someone. It would be a good sign if this government showed that even MPs are not above the law. According to The Island, the President and PM have promised disciplinary action. It better happen.
They need to make an example of him, to serve as a warning to others.
Justice must be seen to be done, a clear message needs to be sent that the old era of thuggery is over.
Can you send this on to Wijedasa Rajapakse (Minister of Justice)?
Thewarapperuma has been doing these things for more than a decade now. This was the reason why he lift SLFP (during Chandrika period) originally (not getting him out of police custody once he got arrested, not that his boss didn’t try. But the arresting officer was IGPs son who didn’t follow orders from politicians). And he hasn’t changed. Best thing to do is not to give him nominations for the next election .
the president and pm shouldn’t have to deal with this shit. the police should arrest him and bring him to court. it’s very simple.
Nuwan is correct!
