I haven’t been blogging much, I know. It’s partly because we’ve been doing a lot of work on YAMU, especially shipping 1.0.1 of the Android app today. It’s on the Google Play Store now. Inosh Perera did the programming (learning Android in the process) and Janith helped out with some design. My main contribution was a bunch of dead-end designs and like 6,000 lines of code we’re not using. The app isn’t perfect but it’s more perfect than it was 10 iterations ago. We think it’s pretty good.
Broadly, it has a catalog of over 400 (as of now) hand-reviewed places around Colombo and Sri Lanka. Plus a lot of ongoing events.
The basic features are that it shows you the latest stuff, stuff we recommend, stuff near you and offers a search. Under the hood, we’ve added meta data to every listing (like price, dress code, etc) and made that all searchable. We’ve also added ratings so the recommended tab tells you stuff with 4+ stars, varying depending on what time of day it is. Around now, for example, we’ll show more lunchy places.
Stuff that needs to be done is databasing content on the phone to make it faster, enabling more login options than just Facebook, and of course the iPhone version (in a month we hope). But for now, if you’re on Android check it out.
