Vigil Against BBS This Friday

The Bodu Bala Sena (racist Sinhalese force) is headquartered, under the protection of a powerful monk, in the Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi building at Thumulla Junction. While they go around threatening violence and harm to Muslims and other minorities in a very un-Buddhist way, no one has coherently protested against them. Until now. The Group Buddhist Questioning Bodu Bala Sena is organizing a candlit vigil against their hate speech and corruption of the dhamma this Friday at 7 PM. They’ll gather at the Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Mawatha building near Thumulla Junction.

A lot of people complain or write petitions against this rising hate in the country, but it’s important to have physical events like this. No matter how many online petitions there are, if we want really change we have to show that this many flesh and blood humans do not agree with a Buddhism that attacks people and threatens violence against them. It’s important to show each other that this is not Buddhism and it’s not Sri Lanka.

  4. This rally was an absolute failure. Hardly anyone there. It just shows we need even more muslims on the committee of Buddhists Questioning Bodu Bala Sena. Please, please we need more muslims to join us. Hardly anyone Buddhists turned up to this rally. Mostly our muslim brothers parading in the name of Buddhism. Some even got arrested. Shame on you all for not attending today.

  6. @Realist Any Buddhists inside the building were not part of the protest and don’t count. Its a Buddhist institution after all. The vigil was mostly non Buddhists, actually mostly muslims from what I saw.

    He is the one who is leading this BBS. Isn’t it disgrace for the entire Buddhist Clergies. The Muslims never get provoked by this BBS statements. Their expectation is to provoke the Muslims and to create another chaos in this blessed land. But instead of provocation the Muslims pray the Almighty to bless everyone with peace.

    However I am personally thankful to the BBS for making the entire Muslims of Sri Lanka to know what is Halal. Now the Muslims are more concerned than ever before about their consumables.

  18. Exactly. See. The existence of the BBS on balance is essentially a good thing. It makes Muslims more aware of Halaal and the rest of us more aware of how to avoid halaal if we so wish. Thanks to the BBS I learnt that the ACJU required a certain number of muslims to be employed in a company before issuing certificates. That seemed unfair and haram to me. So now I avoid Halaal. From the failed vigil Friday, I learnt that many NGO and minority religion funded groups vie for power with the BBS in this little land. For example it is well known that the Buddhists Against BBS group on facebook censors comments and bans people posting comments not to their ideology. That is not the buddhist way surely. Censorship is not a buddhist doctrine. So they are in many ways similar to the BBS as they too have an undisclosed agenda and are obviously directly or indirectly connected to and funded by muslim organisations.

    Buddhist Historical sites – I don’t know enough to comment on Kurugala but given the amount of lies being propagated by the BBS I have good reason to doubt what they say. Do you have independent archaeological or historical sources you can quote on its history?
