The offending update.
Noted, well, racist and popular politician Bal Thackeray died on November 17th. In response the entire city of Mumbai shut down, partly out of loyalty and muchly out of fear. One girl, however, wrote something rather innocuous on Facebook, basically her opinion. Then her and one friend who ‘liked’ the post were arrested. India is sitting on a tinder keg of tensions on a good day, so there were obviously being cautious. This, however, was a bit silly and a bit much.
With all respect, every day, thousands of people die, but still the world moves on. Just due to one politician died a natural death, everyone just goes bonkers. They should know, we are resilient by force, not by choice. When was the last time, did anyone showed some respect or even a two-minute silence for Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Azad, Sukhdev or any of the people because of whom we are free-living Indians? Respect is earned, given, and definitely not forced. Today, Mumbai shuts down due to fear, not due to respect. (via The Hindu)
Thing is, what she said seems to make sense and is the opposite of the racial incitement that Thackeray made an empire out of. The girls were recently let out on Rs. 15,000 (Indian) bail but not before their houses were attacked by mobs and relatives threatened. Bit embarrassing for India.

So much for the “world’s largest democracy”…
The terror of Bal Thackeray reigns, even after his death.
What a pity, I though we were rid of him.
Accused paedophile on 252 charges sipping tea in Sri Lanka
A FORMER Catholic brother charged five months ago with hundreds of counts of sexual abuse against children and young adults is living on a tea plantation in Sri Lanka because the authorities dragged their feet in extraditing him to Australia.
The 65-year-old, who recently served two years in a New Zealand prison for abusing young boys, is alleged to have repeatedly raped, molested and abused dozens of young boys at church-run institutions in the Newcastle-Maitland diocese during the late 1970s and ’80s.

gopal, could not get what you meant to say. the shutdown and the poclie asking people to stay indoors? stepping out can be injurious to health? a city held ransom to a party of goons? a state funeral for a man a little more than a thug? sorry, never imagined bombay would come to this.
