AFAIK, Anything.lk had the most Facebook fans of any Sri Lankan brand. Now, however, it seems to be Mobitel, with a base of 200,000. With 1.4 million Sri Lankan Facebook accounts total, that’s pretty big.
I should note that Facebook fans are not like Twitter followers, you can buy them effectively. In fact, FB advertising is the only way to really grow a fan base and, increasingly, you also need to pay to keep them engaged with individual stories.
For YAMU and other FB pages I’ve run I end up paying about 8-11 US cents for every fan acquired. Let’s say 7 for Mobitel, in massive bulk. That’s about $14,000 USD on Facebook marketing, or about 1.9 million LKR. Which I guess isn’t that much, cause it is a valuable asset. I mean, that’s a few TV ads.
I’m still not liking it though. Mobitel generally lacks in all other forms of innovation, with the exception of their train booking facility.
