Belated congrats to Sri Lankan veteran and athlete Pradeep Sanajaya for winning a bronze at the Paralympics. He was just awarded with cash and land by the President. A house will be built with the coordination of the Sports Ministry so he’ll presumably get something entirely unsuitable in ten years, along with a hefty bill and fifteen political appointees that want to live there. But he has something perhaps more worthwhile, which is the appreciation of the country.
God know Sri Lanka has enough disabled people due to war, and Pradeep is an example that they can succeed and continue to make the country proud. For reference, Sri Lanka has also fielded former LTTErs as national sportsmen and women.
If you watch the video above it’s a bit funny because they use his ‘ge’ name, completely confusing the announcers. They just called him the Sri Lankan whose name is too long to pronounce. Indeed, with a name like ‘P. Uggl Dena Pathirannehelag’ (I think they left out the last ge) I wouldn’t know where to start. P. Uggl? Many Sri Lankans have about seven names on their national ID, which serve as a sort of family tree and ancestral postal address. And yet they’re known as Pradeep, or Chandana.
Anyways, congratulations Pradeep, for bringing home a medal.
