Ghanian style cake pops via niner bakes.
This is Savan’s pet thing, calling himself a darkie. We were walking around Beijing and he’s talking about how darkies are oppressed and they shouldn’t bomb Gaddafi and it drives me crazy. Cause Savan looks Pakistani. But with that bit of biased intro, what do you think? Savan thinks Sri Lanka should pitch itself as the world’s Black Star. Implying that we’re black. I think this is dumb.
Anyways, here’s what he wrote on the subject. I’m not copy-editing it either.
Savan believes Sri Lanka should drop miracle of Asia and refreshingly Sri Lanka and start marketing itself as the blackstar of the world.
He believes that Sri Lanka is the world’ s most successful (at least in terms of per capita nominal gdp and human development ) black or generally dark skinned nation. To come to this absurd conclusion he is excluding micro nations (2 million and below- Jamaica, Trinidad, Fiji, Maldives) and those whose wealth is purely resource based (Botswana- 1 million people tons of diamonds, Gabon few people, lots of oil, terrible wealth distribution, or Angola- oil but a mess)
He is also excluding most of South America (too many whites and mestizos, South Africa- whites and white dominated economy) and most absurdly Indonesia(our anthropologist has decided they go in the East Asian yellow pile, while Arabs, Iranians etc go in the West Asian yellow pile)
So basically the most successful South Asian or African nation. Even this seems like a bold claim and he’s a bit stumped by the Dominican Republic (10 million very dark people more capita income than SL). Still somewhere in this muddle there might be a point- instead of thinking of ourselves as a struggling Asian nation lagging behind Singapore, Malaysia or even Indonesia maybe it helps some people to imagine we are the most successful black/dark nation in the world.
He is now suggesting we take Ghana’s black star and put it on the lion flag…
For me the broader question is are we black. And I don’t think so. Even if we are grouped with Africa for whatever reason, South Africa is still the BRICs and I don’t think there’s enough to exclude it from this artificial category. And the Dominican Republic (heaven to Haiti’s hell) seems richer than us. Plus we’re not black, though I guess if you graded nations by skin tone (which no one actually seems to do) we’d be on the darker side. I dunno, it’s a completely artificial category warped by this character’s peculiar whims. But all categories are artificial anyways, so I guess choose the ones that serve your particular ends.
