My favorite Sri Lankan product is quite possibly the electrified mosquito racket AKA Death Machine. It is literally a tennis racket where the crosshatch is electrified killing any insects you swing it at. It also hurts like the dickens to touch directly, if you’re wondering. It’s like playing tennis. Against dengue.
Another use of the Death Machine is as a flashlight, since the base usually contains one. It’s a shitty flashlight but this is my default since, uh, since it’s my only flashlight. The biggest problem with flashlights is finding them in the dark. I mean, it’s dark, and who remembers where you kept the flashlight. This unique design by Greg Hinzmann should solve that problem. The Trioh! is a flashlight which also doubles as a lamp, plugged into the wall. You can use it as a regular lamp (on/off) but it’s also A) portable and B) turns on when the power goes out. Then it serves as a flashlight. Damn cool.
I daresay this product would be more popular in the developing world where we have weekly powercuts and fearsome monsoons. The project is on Kickstarter and trying to raise more funding. If anyone’s interested perhaps we could order some in bulk. The funder cost is about $60 and it’s set to retail at $79, which isn’t cheap I guess, since a mosquito racket is like $20. But that’s also a shit flashlight and you can’t find it when you need it, plus the Trioh! is just pretty.
