In a good way. Some of the boys from Sri Lanka’s local fight night scene are competing in an Indian martial arts tournament this weekend. It’s called Super Fight League and all of Bollywood will be there.
The classic Sri Lankan fight is the drunken shove, followed by the ‘hold me back, hold me back’. Usually maybe two punches are thrown and then it resembles two rugby scrums, each pushing in opposite directions. Alternately, there is the group shove, where they’re pushed together and nobody really knows what’s going on.
Then there’s the Kama fight, where someone connected gets their guards to hold someone down while they whale on them, that’s actually pathetic. Also the Ministerial son pistol whipping. Both criminal at best, psychopathic really.
I haven’t seen this, but my friend swears that many Sri Lankans don’t actually punch, they swing, with a straight arm, I guess like a cricket throw, but to the face. Then there’s the potbellied kick. More interestingly, there is also a native Sri Lankan martial art.
Anyways, I digress. The Sri Lankans are Madura Ratnyake, Mayura, and Tiran. I asked a friend involved in Fight Night (a local event) and these guys are all quite competitive there, often fighting above their weight class. I think this is mixed martial arts, like UFC.
Let’s see. The fight is this Sunday (March 11th) at 7:15 IST, which is Sri Lanka time also. It’s streamed live over YouTube: www.youtube.com/sfl.
