Mahela bowled. Oh mantz. AFP photo via Island Cricket.
Sri Lanka lost the finals to Australia. Which sucks. However, I watched the series, which is actually a big thing. After the political debacle that was the World Cup Final a lot of people just stopped watching. When the captains resigned, the cricket board fought with Malinga, and the players went unpaid for six months, I think even the players lost some faith. That’s back now. So we won something.
Cricket is the one pure thing Sri Lankans have, or at least the one thing we can pretend is pure. And politicians (from Mahinda on down) messed that up. It was depressing. After everything melted down, however, Sri Lanka brought the old captain Mahela Jayawardena back, and all is suddenly right with the world. Not that we won the tri-nations, but we’re winning. If we lose it’s at least on the field, not in board meetings.
So we coulda played better and won the Tri-Nations, but thank God Sri Lanka is back in [constant second place to Australia] form. There is nothing like a good match day in Sri Lanka. It really is a religious experience. Here’s for more separation of church and state.
