Paper cranes.
I went to the Salvage fundraiser at the Saskia Fernando Gallery. The art was quite good, I liked the Bill Clinton mash-up, but too broke for art now. I did donate a significant percentage of my net worth, which was like 500 bucks. The art is cool, but what they’re doing it for is cooler. Salvage works with the Community Concern Society running a halfway house for women, a school and an HIV drop-in center.
The art and jewelry is produced in those centers, to give livelihood and to help fund the centers. I think they only require a few million rupees to run, but that’s still money. It is good work. Emerge is another group that does similar work, supporting girls that have had to leave home to escape abuse. I think Salvage focuses on women who’ve left abusive homes, often with kids.
What people need in these situations is a place to crash, some cash and work, as I’ve said before. That seems to be what Salvage provides. Anyways, here’s some of the art. It’s pretty cool and affordable, the Bill Clinton was Rs. 15,000 for example. They also have jewelry and some pretty cool greeting cards, including one that reads ‘Get Out Of My Heart And Into My Trishaw’. I think this exhibition is ongoing for a week or so.
Bill Clinton. Makes me think of happier times, geopolitically.
World’s apart, but on the same page.
Pink girl, through newspapers.
The Salvage stuff is at the Saskia Fernando Gallery on Dharmapala, near DineMor. Also check them out on Facebook. I think you can also do stuff like sponsor drug rehabilitation or school for individuals.
Saskia is HOT!!
