The Galle Music Festival was quite good. Here’s a mediocre video that doesn’t really do it justice, but you get a sense. There were artists from all over the world and Sri Lanka, and they were very good.
Of the acts I saw, all got the crowd clapping, moving or bobbing their heads. These are different rhythms, not the usual rock backbeat or electronic drumbeat, but still compelling. I liked it. From the Kaffers doing baila of sorts to a Bangladeshi dancer cavorting around the stage, it was great to watch and hear.
The headliners of sort were the Raghu Dixit Project, who were more of a band band, sorta. They guy has an amazing voice and the bass and drums are just enveloping. I only caught their Wellawatte show, but they were great, and very funny. They were telling a hall full of Wellawatte aunties about putting the hash of lust in their pipe and smoking it. The music in the video above is from that performance.
Please note that this camera is pretty crap for video and iMovie is pretty crap for editing. So is what it is. It was a good Festival and I look forward to next year, wherever on the island it is. You can see some photos here.
