MIA is a great artist, and I kinda look at her politics like performance art. It’s like her middle finger at the Superbowl. More posturing than an actual position. I dunno. When it comes to Sri Lanka she’s a hater, but I can’t hate on her music.
This song is OK, but the video is pretty boss. It is a weird, dusty, Middle Eastern car video. There are old Beamers and beat up Alfa Romeos doing donuts and side wheelies across some pre-urban Afghan landscape. It’s pretty ill.
That’s what rappers do. Create controversy to sell albums. Its pretty hard to stand out from the crowd otherwise.
I would hesitate to apply the appellation ‘great’ to any artist of the 1990’s. Beatles, Abba, maybe Prince, maybe Musical Youth even MJ might just squeeze in, but the last really great act was Queen.
i dunno indi….i loved the song from Pineapple Express but its hard to love a person advocating the ltte…bleh!!! i like her style…and she seems to be always wanting to top it through clothes and her ‘bad’ moves to get more publicity… the super bowl finger thing was the same…i was not scandalized but i guess i just felt pity ….sad sad…
does she even make her music. All i hear is a hodge-podge of stuff mixed together. Beatles didn’t have to create controversy to sell albums, their music was absurdly good and absurdly popular even when they were squeaky clean.
madonna is the possibly the great example of an artist creating controversy to sell music. Infact her theatrics warrant a lot of merit than her music.
I like paper planes and that’s about it. The super Bowl thing was just a pathetic (?successful) attempt to get some publicity, IMHO.
