Bloodsong Termagant. A character in Second Life. Image via Verde O.
I’ve been going through Plotto for, whatsit, plots, and I came across this. “A’s ideal of married happiness is tranquility and comfort * A’s wife, B, proves herself a termagant, and quarrels are frequent”. So what is a termagant. In a word, a bitch, or if you want to be Shakespearian about it, a shrew.
Termagant, pronounced ter-ma-gent means:
A harsh-tempered or overbearing woman
An imaginary deity of violent and turbulent character, often appearing in morality plays (Google)
Wikipedia, however, cites is original meaning as being an apocryphal Muslim God. “In Medieval Europe, Termagant was the name given to a god that the Europeans believed Muslims worshipped.” Over time this came to mean a bullying person, perhaps in robes, then finally a hectoring woman.
So anyways, if you want to call someone a bitch and stay classy, try termagant.
