My parents were one of the Colombo households selected to do their census report online (the eCensus). It’s a pretty cool idea, unevenly implemented, but a good start.
On the downside, they haven’t got an SSL (security) certificate, so any browser gives you a warning. Their response has been to print something telling you to ignore the warning, which is suboptimal at best. They should really just sort that out to enable actual secure browsing rather than, trust us, it’s secure.
Beyond that it seems just like a bunch of forms to fill in. It’s not an especially sexy UI or anything, but it’s better than paper, and it means that an ‘enumerator’ doesn’t have to physically come to your house. Though I wonder if we still get the sticker above the door. Perhaps it’s a QR code.
In another plus, as my dad noted on his company blog, this years census is also asking about Internet access and use, so we should finally get some decent stats on that, among other things. I think this will also be the first census in yonks that includes the North and East. Should be illuminating.
