Artwork by Hans Schabus that ran (double spread I think) in the Daily Mirror. Part of the public space as museum idea.
The Colombo Art Biennale starts today. Their website has bricked it website is colomboartbiennale.org and you can download the programme here (or view on the Artholic blog). I’ve highlighted the stuff that I think is cool below but please check out their Facebook page and Twitter for more updates.
Generally, the thing runs from today (Wednesday) till Sunday. The central spot is probably Park Street Mews, where you can get tickets for ticketed items. The Art is free to see there and at the National Art Gallery (near Nelum Pokuna) and the JDA Perera Gallery (on Horton Place, I think in the school for visual arts).
Besides that there are video screenings at the Goethe Institute from Thursday to Sunday at 6:30 PM, curated walks from Friday to Sunday at the JDA, Park Street and National Gallery (in that order, starting at 2 and 3 for the National Gallery on Sunday). That sentence was getting too long, starting over. There are also Art Talks daily from Thursday at 11 and also in the afternoon.
Honestly, I’d recommend knocking up at Park Street, looking at some art and grabbing a programme and then picking a few things to go to. There are venues around Colombo and some of them should be interesting. I’m (somewhat incongruously) moderating a few Art Talks at the SKYY Bar which used to be Tantra, which used to be my favorite place, so I’m curious as to how it’s changed. There’s also stuff at the Warehouse Project, the Lionel Wendt and Casa Colombo.
For To Look At Art
Anyways, the main thing is the art, so there are exhibitions open to the public from 12 noon to 8 pm all day (till 9 at Park Street Mews). The locations are the National Art Gallery and the JDA Perera Gallery.
The Parties
The Becoming One Party (ticketed) is on Sunday at 8 at the Warehouse Project, Maradana. There’s also a street party on Sunday from 12 noon at Park Street Mews.
Note: I spelled Biennale wrong in the first draft of this. It’s ennale, not annale
