So many things wrong with this picture.
This is just a whole academy of fail. The UNP launched a website today which the Daily Mirror did a story about. The banner in the photo read what I thought was xnews.com, which is a UFO site. The Daily Mirror transcribed the URL as www.xnesws.com, which is not anything, and they didn’t hyperlink either. UNP.lk has no information. After really thinking about it I figured out that the URL is srilankaxnews.com. Also, it sucks.
1. The Launch
First off, website launches are horrendous and should really be stopped. I did the UNP’s site in 2004 and there wasn’t even Internet at the launch. I had to load the site in a window at home, minimize the window, and then Karu Jayasuriya hit a button to make the window appear. It was rather silly. And newspapers should really learn how to use hyperlinks.
They’re using Blogger, presumably to get around the censorship of their original domain, lankawaynews
2. The Site
Anyways, the site. It’s in Sinhala, which is good, but I know that they could get that volume of stuff translated into Tamil for like Rs. 30,000 a month. Since the UNP’s last bastion is majority Tamil-speaking Colombo, they might consider that.
The site is actually a blog, it’s just a Blogger blog with a custom domain name. I actually think this is parsimonious and good. And it avoids complete censorship. Since their first iteration of the site (lankawaynews) was blocked they seem to have just put the content onto Blogger and launched it anyways. Good idea.
It’s not a very good template, but it’s the content that matters.
3. The Tagline
The tagline is Uncensored News Of The Rajapaksha Regime. I find this confusing. Wouldn’t that be a blog by the regime itself? Isn’t that a rather limiting and kinda permanently oppositional stance? I mean, what of the country, or if the regime ends? They don’t seem to have thought about or considered that end.
4. The Content
My gripe is that the images aren’t cropped correctly and they’re generally not good. But I’m a bit weird like that. My Sinhala is atrocious, but they seem to be a site along the lines of lankaenews (also blocked), hitting CSN (run by a Rajapaksa’s girlfriend), corruption, whatever. Lankaenews is an equally hideous site but it has volume. For these sites you have to be on top of the news, and they’re missing stuff, like the recent dog culling brouhaha.
Basically, I think it’s a weak effort web-wise, hideous to behold and badly launched. With frequent content, however, those limitations can be overcome. The content as is, however, doesn’t look good or frequent enough. Let’s see if that improves. Good luck chaps, always nice to see new blogs out there.
UNP’s most beloved by the common people, Jayalath, Ravi K, Mangala and last but not least Ranil. Good luck winning the next election!

Wow. You know that culling of the dogs that was proposed? Well, instead of the dogs, I really think this lot should be culled.
