Some captions need to be rewritten. Here is the Daily Mirror on the photo above.
National Youth Front had come forward to provide financial assistance to renovate UNP Head Quarters ‘Sirikotha’ which was damaged by a commotion at the election of officer bearers in December last year. Here the UNP Gampaha District MP and National Youth Front President Ruwan Wijeyawardene ( right) hands over a cheque to UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at his office yesterday. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake is also present. (Pix By Nisal Badhuge)
Here’s another option:
Here MP Ruwan Wijeyawardene hands over a cheque to his cousin, the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at his office yesterday. As a full disclosure, Ruwan Wijewardena is also the son of the owner of this newspaper. The cheque is intended for repairs following an intra-party dispute over Ranil’s continued leadership of the UNP.
It’s not necessarily nefarious that they are cousins, and that the family does own The Daily Mirror and Sunday Times (plus Lankadeepa and more). It just makes for a slightly more interesting caption than a generic outpouring of support from the UNP youth. The other photos on the page are all of rather old people, but I won’t get into that.
So much for “family rule”.
