I was walking yesterday and the neighborhood smelled (much) worse than usual. Get to the corner and there is this horrendous waterfall into the gutter, spewing black acrid waste. The guy on the corner (video here) said it was from waste water from the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital (which is rather far away). It smells and looks horrendous. By the time I got back it had slowed to a trickle, but really.
This drain goes directly into the Wellawatte canal, which goes into the ocean. So there’s now a ton of, like, medical and human waste in the canal and ocean. I’m not sure exactly whose responsibility this is, but it’s happened once before and its noxious to God and man.
As mentioned, it’s stopped for now, but this really really has to stop, like, forever. I’m also a bit horrified because I don’t think this stuff is going to a treatment center in the first place.
Unbelievable…how completely ancient! I hope a paper will pick it up and do a whole scoop on it. I remember the Gen Hospital at Kohuwela wa burning medical waste. Crazy!!!
No, no, Indi only Muslims are polluting the country. , Hence, don’t highlight these things, so we can develop as a country….
SJP is miles away from Dehiwala and there are lot of canals around it (if they ever want to dump their waste water in to)
They also burn medical waste at the National Hospital
Pathetic. Is there anything called “planning” in Sri Lanka?
Whats wrong with burning medical waste. In fact its one of the best methods of disposing medical waste. Haven’t you heard about Medical waste incinerators used in western countries? burning may not the be most ecofriendly but its the most effective and cheapest solutions. However you have to do it correct in covered incinerators.
Good piece of investigative reporting Indi
yeah, at National Hospital they just burn it in a dumpster on the street
