Yes, what of it?
You ever listen to rappers where they spend half the song telling you what their name is? Yeah. The President is kinda like that. They’re naming the new performing arts center the ‘Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa’ theatre, which I think is a bit much. Even Namal Rajapaksa says he’s embarrassed by the relentless publicity his family gets in the state press, but I think the old man digs it.
Off the top of my head, I can think of the Mahinda Rajapaksa Port (Hambantota), the Mahinda Rajapaksa Film Village Thing Which Nobody Uses, the Mahinda Rajapaksa Cricket Stadium, and Mihin Airlines. This isn’t just Mahinda. Our official capital – Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte – couldn’t just be Kotte, JR Jayawardena had to put his name in there. The Bandaranaike family has the main airport and conference center named after them.
It’s all rather silly because nobody really uses these names anyways. The port is called the Hambantota Port, the cricket stadium is called the Hambantota Stadium and Mihin is called epic fail. Sri Jayawardenapura is called Kotte, or even Colombo, the airport is called the airport, or Katunayake Airport, and the conference center is called BMICH.
Even though MR has tacked his name after the otherwise reasonable Nelum Pokuna (Lotus Pond) center, I can’t imagine anyone calling it that. It’s like the number of times I get called Indrajit. Basically cops and if my mother is mad at me. There’s MG (Mahatma Gandhi) streets all over India, perhaps Mahinda could go with MR. It’s at least shorter.
I dunno. I think it’s OK if other people want to name stuff after you once you go, but till then it does look a bit gauche.
