This looks cool. They’re having street races round Colombo on a proper circuit (round Fort). I’m all for the redevelopment of Fort, starting with the renovation of the Old Dutch Hospital into a shopping complex. Now they’re having these night races on the 16th, preceded by the Electric Peacock music festival at the nearby lighthouse on the 16th. Seems really cool.
The Red Cherry Event Management Company will play host to a series of entertainment events throughout the evening on the 17th of December. Whilst the races take place on the main circuit, the side walks, car parks and alleyways will all be converted in to entertainment zones; from street parties featuring performances by renowned international artists – curated by entertainment partner Electric Peacock Festival (that’s us by the way), gaming zones with mini quad bike tracks, bmx’ing rings, skateboard ramps and specially designed dance floors on Colombo’s high streets. (via Electric Peacock)
AFAIK, CSN (rather crappy sports station) is supporting this event, which means it has the support of the President’s sons, which means it should happen without friction. They already had some drag races down Green Path (down a stretch soon to be renamed Nelum Pokuna Mawatha). I can’t say I’m much of a car racing fan per se, but I do have fond memories of the (video game) night races in Gran Turismo and it’ll be nice to see in the CMB.
The Colombo city center was basically abandoned during the war, but now people are slowly starting to take it back. Cool cool cool.
The tickets scene for this I’m finding a bit confusing. I can’t find an official anything for the Night Races, but Electric Peacock’s page lists the following: “Ticket prices to watch the races range from Rs50/- Rs100 /- Rs250/- Rs3,000/-. Corporate boxes are available with prices on request by emailing koshi@csn.lk 0r ayesha@csn.lk”. I’m assuming you can just knock up on the Galle Face Green and get a look. The Electric Peacock Festival itself is selling combo festival and race tickets for 3k.
anything[dot]lk has a deal on the race tickets…
sold out it seems
This is cool. But what about property that maybe damaged by accidents? what are the safety measures for spectators at the roadside? When vehicles race accidents are expected. I’d really like to know what measures and guarantees Police are taking for event. Except for these concerns this is good.
