Ranil and Mano, Mano in green at right.
I saw that Mano was resigning from the CMC on the Daily Mirror and didn’t get it. People voted for him and with a minority UNP government, the DPF were basically power brokers. They say it’s to ‘focus on the building the party’, but that sounds a lot to me like politicians resigning to ‘be with their families’. I wonder what else is going on, or within.
Here’s the press release the DPF issued:
DPF Leader Mano Ganesan will resign from Colombo Municipal Council as per the party decision said party general secretary Dr. Nalliah Kumaraguruparan in a media release issued by DPF media office. The release further said that presidium, which is the highest decision making apparatus in the party has arrived at the decision. Party expects our leader to totally involve himself in the party building process. Our party is not in alliance with UNP like in the past. We obtained near 30,000 votes in three LG areas in this low turn-out mini election in the Colombo district. We need to capitalize on this sizable vote base and prepare the party to face all future elections. The final decision and official announcement in this regard will be made by the politburo this week.
As a bit of background, the UNP won the Colombo Municipal Council, but with only a minority government. Mano, who used to run under the UNP umbrella, ran independently and won enough seats to make his DPF a quite relevant minority party. Mano was a former MP and perhaps has his eyes on bigger things, but well, people did vote for him as a municipal councillor. I don’t get why he’d resign after like one session.
