If you haven’t been following, some crazy Maldivians have been attacking monuments that South Asian countries gave them as gifts to commemorate the SAARC meeting there. First they burnt the Pakistani monument, then poured oil on the Sri Lankan lion. Now the Sri Lankan lion has been totally defaced. Literally, it’s face chopped off. Madness.
I think this is just a small group trying to cause trouble and embarrass President Anni in the face of the region, but it’s really quite bad press for the country as well. Opposition politicians are saying that these monuments are false idols but, again, I don’t think anyone is going to worship a Sri Lankan lion. I mean, they have a tsunami monument. Presumably nobody worships that.
I think it’s just a political stunt, but really cynical. Oppose the President fine, but insulting guests and embarrassing the whole country? For shame.
On the plus side, if Sri Lanka ever wanted to invade the Maldives, now would be the time. Just kidding, just kidding. Maldivians are great. This is really out of character.
