As a follow up to a report on declining suicides in general, this is how Sri Lankans kill themselves. Sadly, pesticide and insecticide dominate. Why do they kill themselves? Basically, their family or spouse drive them to it. As the report says “Harrasment by the husband & family disputes” is the number one (reported reason) for suicides in Sri Lanka.

Pesticide, fire and acid instead of a soothing overdose of sleeping pills? Must be a desire to attract attention to the act, even while dying.
Farmer families with economic difficulties only had access to pesticides & fire. Narcotics is a luxury. Attracting attention must have been the last thing on their minds.

Shammi, it is actually not that easy to die from an overdose of ‘sleeping pills’ (which is usually some form of a benzodiazipine). You need something else as well eg alcohol, other sedative drugs. But have to agree I have no idea why anyone would choose to die by strangling…
There goes my last resort :D
