This magazine is literally a Mahinda photo album.
I was in a waiting room when I saw Target magazine. This was an offshoot of Business Today basically designed to flatter Mahinda Rajapaksa so as to get work for BT Options. Business Today itself long ago descended into prostate flattery and not much of a business magazine (the new LBR has actual information). Target, however, was in a league of its own. I hadn’t seen it for years, but while the size has dropped, the shamelessness remains. There were 20 pages and over 50 photos of a Rajapaksa.
One page had literally seven photos of Mahinda. It was kind of embarrassing. There is propaganda and then there is pathetic. This is just sad. I won’t even say that BT Options has sold out as a publishing house. They’ve given the shop away. The Nation is basically state owned now, but they still publish a range of content. Even the Daily News and Sunday Observer don’t put a photo of Mahinda on every single page. BT Options, no problem.
I used to vaguely respect Business Today, but it’s really not a business magazine anymore, nor does it have much connection to the private sector. It’s a business, marketing to the public sector, in public.
