Voting ended at 4 pm today, they’re now releasing results
Sri Lanka’s Local election results are coming out now, you can follow them at slelections.gov.lk. What’s fun is the latest results are blinking, so you have to try to click them before they disappear. It’s like playing whack-a-mole.
|Ampara||SLMuslimC – 49%||ITamilAK – 22%|
What are the results? So far the UPFA (government) has won everything. This is a testament to the popularity of the gov and Mahinda, and also the abject failure of the Opposition under Ranil who, by all accounts, should have resigned about six years ago. Local elections are generally won on local issues (garbage, sanitation) and people are generally wise to vote for people who can actually get stuff done. Ranil has pitched this as a broad protest vote to restart the UNP, but that won’t fix anyone’s drains.
What are the surprises? Well the UPFA won Nuwara Eliya and Kandy. Both have large Tamil/minority populations and have usually been UNP. The UNP lost but competed in Hambantota, Mahinda’s home district, largely because of Sajith Premadasa I think. He could have certainly led the party to a better result. So could a trained monkey, but still.
Anyways, Colombo is still pending. It’s also important to note that news is dominated by the death of former MP Bharata and the critical injury of MP Duminda Silva in an
interintra-party fight in Mulleriyawa. These guys are total assholes and make the whole process look bad.
Note, these results are only for Municipal Council elections, and only for part of the country. For July’s results, including the north, see here.
*Gampaha and Negombo are grouped as a district but have two Municipal Councils.
