The second season of Act Before You Think. They have comfortable wooden and woven chairs, a great if rather hot space, and some very interesting teams. ABYT is a season of competitive improv theatre, run by Mind Adventures. To keep abreast, follow their Facebook page.
Improv is difficult and the main word to describe the competitors (Dishum Dishum and Improbable Fiction) is brave. They have short time frames to work in (too short I think) and the theatre descends into writhing and screaming pretty fast. When they have a bit of time, however, like in a TV talk show skit, they were able to play off each other and it was really quite funny and good. Both teams were whip-smart and able to respond wittily to the questions as well.
ABYT was a great idea last time but some of the lead up teams were rather bad. This time people seem to get it and I’d say the overall performances are beter (or perhaps I caught a better one). The seating is great, the space is amazing (a huge renovated warehouse near the Elphinstone theatre, operated in cooperation with residents from the nearby tenements) and the crowd is intelligent in and of itself.
Anyways, great stuff. Act Before You Think is every Thursday until the final on October 6th. Tickets are Rs. 350 at the door and you can get a bellyful of vade and great chocolate cake for like 100 bucks.
