This 2006 poster shows Ranil and Mahinda making out.
As Opposition Leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe gets all the perks of a government minister. On the day of scheduled protests in front of the UNP office, he called in the police and – coincidentally – crews were deployed to repave the road. He was literally hiding under the carpet.
The sensible people in the UNP are saying Ranil has a deal with the government. In fact and deed they certainly do work together. It’s not a bad thing to work with the government in the national interest, but Ranil is just doing it in self-interest, choking and drowning the opposition party in the process. While Mahinda is shameless in the pursuit of power, Ranil is just shameless. Blech.
It would be pathetic were it not so sad. Now the Deputy Minister Nirmala Kotelawala is saying they repaved the road yesterday because the people in Kotte wanted it repaved. Since that’s how things are done, the people of Dehiwela want the back roads of Sarankarra repaved. Also Rajagiriya, near the elections commission.
Ranil is the Opposition Dictator, he no longer leads by consent. If he had any shame he would have gone years ago, perhaps after losing the Presidential election in 2005, or the Parliamentary in 2010, or after not running in the 2010 Presidential race at all. Certainly after dyeing his hair to try and look like Mahinda.
What’s sad is that the forces of opposition have to be marshaled to oppose the opposition leader rather than the people actually running the country. The UNP is protesting in the street, against themselves. It’s quite sad. Ranil should put party and nation ahead of himself and resign.
