Raising the Chinese flag, for some China day
This is from the a random history book, about British Colonialism:
The British Government in Sri Lanka actively supported the rapid development of the plantation industry. The encouragement extended by the state was not only limited to the removal of the state monopoly on trade, but also to develop the infrastructure and let the private sector assume a capitalist mode of production. The provision of infrastructure facilities such as the construction of roads and railways, the development of the artificial port of Colombo, permitting civil servants to engage in coffee cultivation, facilitating the recruitment of “cheap docile and hardworking immigrant laborers from South Indian coastal states and altering the acquisition of lands under the Crown Land Encroachment Ordinance of 1840 and outright sale of such lands to the planters at a very low price are some of the activities of the colonial government.
Let’s swap the Chinese in.
The Chinese Government in Sri Lanka actively supported the rapid conclusion of the civil war. The encouragement extended by the state was not only limited to the removal of the LTTE, but also to develop the infrastructure and let the private sector assume a state capitalist mode of production. The provision of infrastructure facilities such as the construction of roads and railways, the development of the artificial port of Hambantota, permitting civil servants to engage in economic projects, facilitating the recruitment of “free docile and hardworking immigrant laborers from Chinese prisons and altering the acquisition of lands under proposed 2011 legislation and outright sale of such lands to arms dealers at a very low price are some of the activities of the imperial government.
Spot on, I have been of this position for awhile. Most people don’t care though. Colonialism is distinctly Western phenomenon to them.
Yep I agree it’s amazing how everyone seems oblivious to the face that soon we will be ‘Made by China’. Also refer the article in the Daily Mirror about the Chinese Yuan being allowed to trade here.
Type ‘fact’. Fried Rice for life.
The Chinese are the modern day Romans. They’ve reached into every continent, and in the masses! Its come to a point where the PA system in the Melbourne Airport is announced in Mandarin.
I really don’t mind the colonization as even as Sri Lankans we move to England, America, Aussie and Canada for a better life. But they’re just here to work and send the money that could have been earned by a Sri Lankan back to their country. Its not like we don’t have any problems of our own.
Gotta love it!
I had a friend from Hong Kong who visited around 1994-1995.
We were driving down Buller’s Road when he exclaimed “what on earth is that?” I looked and said “oh, that’s the new Chinese embassy that is being built”. He said ” Good heavens, when are they taking over? That’s bigger than the Chinese embassy in Hong Kong”. This was when Hong Kong was still British.

I think it is a case of we will take a headache if it is free or even if it is at high interest as long as I do not need to pay the interest.
What are we leaving for our future generations as the debt will have to be paid by them? It is so selfish just to think of ourselves in the light of the happenings we see today. Why we cannot see the parallels with previous colonialists is beyond me.
Three cheers for China from me!
Sri Lanka has quite ancient connections to China.
