School kids from Kurnegala, come to check out the green.
A Chinese defence contractor China Aviation Technology Import-Export Corporation (CATIC) is being sold seven acres of state-land in Colombo’s ‘Galle Face’ beachfront deputy economic development minister Lakshman Abyewardene said.
The minister says having a Chinese hotel would help attract tourist from that country who are now big spenders. He said CATIC operated 11 hotels and 56 super markets.
“When their own hotel is built, there is a link,” Abeywardene said. “With that link there will be an increase in tourists.”
He said arrivals from China were up 83 percent to 8,613 so far this year. (LBO)
So, nevermind the power of the media bits, they’re just proceeding with business as usual. I wonder if the same revert to the mean will happen with the dodgy pension plan that protesters defeated.
BTW, the justification based on Chinese tourists is bunk, at least in the short/medium term. The numbers have increased 83% because they were almost zero before.
Most of Sri Lanka’s tourist arrivals come from India and Europe. Around 2% of an estimated 48,000 tourists in May 2011 were from China. That’s 1,337 people. (Sunday Leader editorial)
The deal is being done because CATIC supplied military aircraft and this is part of some other wheel within a wheel. It’s not about the people of Sri Lanka, or the people of China for that matter.
