Oh my God, there’s yellow everywhere! Wait, no.
The Christian Science Monitor wrote: “Asian-born Australians may soon outnumber whites, says government study”. But this is plain incorrect. I dug up the data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and it says nothing of the sort. But don’t take my word for it, look at the chart. Only 9% of Australians are Asian born, up from 5.5% in 2000. They’re hardly taking over.
What the writer John Dagge seems to mean is “Asian-born Australians are on the brink of overtaking their European-born counterparts for the first time in the country’s history”. The headline and broad jist of the story, however, broadens that fact to the point of falsehood. The headline states that there will be more Asian born people than ‘whites’ (a racial category not mentioned in the data). As you can see from the comments on the article, a lot of people didn’t get the point.
This is a demographic catastrophe beyond belief. And it’s happening not only in Australia but also the USA, Canada, and many European nations. All further immigration in to Australia must stop so that people of European descent who founded the country will not be swamped in their own nation.
So when will this be labelled as the invasion that it is? Australia was made great by European immigrants be they from England, Germany, Italy or Greece.
Of course, the numbers are not actually shocking at all. The data they’re drawing these broad conclusions from does show that more people are migrating from Asia than Europe, perhaps not surprising seeing that Australia is basically in Asia.
Please note the off-scale jump from 2000 to 2005, that’s the data they had
If you look at this chart, Asian immigrants haven’t even outstripped Europeans yet, they’re just getting there. Second, no form of immigrant is nowhere near outnumbering ‘whites’ anytime soon. Third, race isn’t even mentioned in the data. It’s country of origin.
Besides completely misinterpreting the numbers, the article also carries a casual xenophobic tone. “To be sure, Australia still battles racism… But the raw numbers cannot be denied… The biggest population lives in Melbourne where they have pushed out Italians to form the largest non-Anglo community.”
It then closes with this headdesk quote:
“Close to 1 in 10 people in Australia are born in Asia,” says Bob Birrell, a director at Monash University’s Centre for Population and Urban Research. “There is nothing like that in other countries including the US or Canada, which are considered highly multicultural. It is a massive shift and it has happened over a very short time span.”
Actually, wrong. 12.5% of people in America were born abroad, 30% of them in Mexico (so about 3.75% of the population). About 1 in 5 people in Canada are foreign born. About 40% of Canadian immigrants were from Asia (India, China), so that’s about 8% of the total. Stat Canada is projecting that 30% of the population will be foreign born by 2031.
As to his second point, has Australia seen this level of immigration before. Just look at this graph included in the report. Australia was founded on massive demographic shift, also known as genocide. Perhaps Chinese people are moving into Melbourne, but it’s not like they’re hunting Italians for sport.
So, anyways, I understand that there’s an immigration debate in Australia, but this CSMonitor article just muddies it with really bad analysis of data and poor fact checking. I’m going to give a big fail. What’s sad is that the report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics is very simple, readable and good, especially the section Australia’s Diverse Population. By trying to distill the report for the public, John Dagge of the Christian Science Monitor has actually distorted and mangled the data beyond recognition.
Also, Murali is not a chucker. Check the data.
Note: all of the numbers I’ve used here are from the ABS report, as worked on in my horribly organized spreadsheet. Peruse if you dare.
