Dragon fruit and knife, by my disintegrating camera
They have dragon fruit at the Juiceez on Jawatta Road. You can’t miss it. It looks like it’s in estrus. It’s all flaming and red and on fire. Beautiful fruit. Cut it open and its the only fruit I’ve seen that’s a process color – pure magenta (it can also be white). Dragon fruit is a weird, weird fruit. It’s kinda like a kiwi, at least the seedy part. It’s also a bit like a melon. It’s also nothing like the two. It’s also surprisingly subtle. The main sensation you get is hydration. It feels refreshing. When pushed to describe the taste I can’t. Which is why I find it strange that they make a vodka out of it. Or market it in extracted, commodified form. Dragon fruit is a fruit. It’s best consumed as such.
You can also get dragon fruit at Keells, at least the Nawala/Narahenpita road one. It costs about Rs. 265 for two fruits, Rs. 528/kg. At Juiceez they make a drink out of it, which is quite good.
