I just went to watch Thor, which is not bad. I should note the scene. Get there and this D-list rapper (Krishan Maheson, had to look it up) is stopped in the middle of the road. Kinda douchey, people are trying to get through and he’s just stopped. Then he gets out of the car. Extra douche. Go park down Marine Drive. The girlfriend wanted to go to some Cosmic Sphincter concert so I’m taking the kid. It’s pretty cool. He like Thor, I like Thor, all good. We’re a late so we start running up the narrow road to the Savoy.
Then some trishaw driver starts running behind us, saying something. I try to acknowledge but he’s not making sense, talking about a phone. I have my phone and I came in a car. We keep heading to the theatre. Then he runs after us yelling ‘horing, horing’ – ‘thief, thief’. I think he’s trying to cause a scene and make me hand over my phone in fear. I’m like fuck this and keep going. Then he grabs me by the scruff of my shirt, with a seven year old kid holding my hand. He’s fucking nuts, and people around are basically just watching. I pull away and straight run into the theatre, where he follows us. He asks me to show him what’s in my pockets and I do, like WTF. WTF. I had no idea what happened.
But I digress. What’s happening to the streets? I’ve never been afraid in Sri Lanka before, at any time of the night. Still digressing. Let me resume.
So, Thor. Classic Marvel movie by now. Massive carnage, fuck the collateral damage. What I will focus on is the race of frost people who have had their energy resources taken and been slaughtered and nearly genocided twice, with gusto. Left to live on a barren land. They were sorta the people saved in the story, but not really. The heroes were basically the race oppressing them and letting up the boot a little is branded heroism.
I’m not saying the frost giants weren’t evil looking, but they must have babies and pacifists and stuff. Bad scene.
Also a bit like Iron Man I where he saves basically one village in Afghanistan, briefly, at a cost of millions in property damage and general pointlessness. A bit less like Avatar, where a native race can’t get their shizz together unless led by a white man. As per Dance With Wolves, The Last Samurai, etc.
I’m not saying Thor needs to be an exercise in political relativism, but this whole good vs. evil thing is a bit played. Evil person possible. Evil race? No. Evil Army? Actually, no. For most people in armies it’s a paycheck or an obligation, so I really wonder about those evil hordes of frost giants. Maybe one of them just wanted to be a carpenter. Or an ice cream vendor. But he’s in the fucking army and getting hammered while Asgards take away the only energy supply from his planet.
But they kinda work out their father/son issues at the end, so the destitution of an entire planet is peripheral. Like George Bush Jr and his daddy issues, resolved via Saddam and the rape of Iraq. Did you realize that at one point 76 people a day were dying there? Mad.
So, American Empire and Film, a bit of bullshit but always entertaining. As the empire declines, I will miss their TV. Can’t imagine Chinese TV on the same scale. I think they banned movies about time travel.
