Banana leaf lunch in Slave Island
The Dev World actually has pretty environmental packaging. Short eats will be wrapped in recycled paper and rice served on a banana leaf. Sadly, as we ‘develop’, everything gets boxed in paper, then wrapped in plastic. McDonald’s is probably the end of that continuum, almost more packaging than food. Design website Inhabitat, however, is going the other way and saying that banana leaf could be the packaging of the future. I don’t know if it scales up to industrial levels, however. Banana leaves are non-standard sizes, degrade fast, can’t be kept in a storeroom for months, etc. Interesting idea though.
There was a government programme to churn out steamed banana leaves once (when steamed they can last longer, and I think become more flexible). Dunno how feasible it is though.
Banana leaves? They won’t replace anything, except,
“because apey heart eka Sri Lankan ne”
I too heard this story abour the banana leaf keeping for a week if steamed and dried. Never got around to trying it because we have a plentiful fresh supply.
Wrapping by banana leaf does wonders for the flavour of rice and curry, and I’ve noticed it keeps without spoiling for longer too. The fresh leaf tends to absorb excess moisture from the food, which would otherwise promote the growth of microbes that spoil it.
And yummy yummy lampraise wouldn’t be the same without the leaf, would it?
The plastic used to wrap lunch packets gives out poisonous fumes when it comes in to contact with hot food. So the banana leaf is healthier in addition to being environment friendly.
Also, I remember meat used to come wrapped in alocasia leaves, and then newspaper at meat stalls. Now it’s polythene, I think. It’s two or three layers of polythene at the supermarket, which only adds to the garbage problem.
Banana leaf could be used in small scale as after harvesting farmers just cut the plant. Selling leaf will be an additional income. But a leaf take probably a month or more to grow to its full size. If you do a costing on that basis, the amount farmer get for a leaf is not enaugh at all.
Poisonous fumes? Seriously? I eat off plastic sheets everyday. Yikes!
Learn to cook and buy a good quality lunchbox if you don’t have a kehel pandura.
We do have a kehel pandura, actually. I shall give this some serious thought.
