In a campaign trick to mimic Mahinda, Ranil once dyed his hair
Today I opened an SMS news alert hopefully. The preview read ‘UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has…” and I was hoping it ended ‘resigned’. I am no longer angry or disappointed that he’s killing the party. I’m honestly just embarrassed. Alas, rather than good news it was more of the same. Ranil appointed a TNA MP to a body that the TNA is protesting. Which, incidentally, Ranil is also protesting. The TNA predictably declined and Ranil is left looking silly. All of this makes me think Ranil is part of the Wimal/Mervyn sideshow. He’s not part of the opposition, he’s just another court jester.
Ranil is not only messing up big time, he’s messing up small time. He’s lost sixteen elections, three Presidential elections (including the last he didn’t even contest), and over fifty UNP MPs. He ditched Sarath Fonseka as soon as the unfair election results were in, saying everything was fine. Now he can’t even protest the 18th Amendment properly, instead participating in it by appointing people to Mahinda’s councils. He’s messing up small time in that he apparently didn’t check with the TNA, getting egg on his face when they rejected him. He messes up small, important things constantly, like not checking the age of a candidate in Colombo, getting the UNP knocked off the mayoral ballot, striking a deal with a trishaw driver for a party symbol, then having the trishaw driver not leave as promised.
Ranil is constantly negotiating and constantly getting screwed. The time for negotiations has passed. I hope the rest of his party will walk and sit independently, because Ranil is now part of the media circus that the government feeds the people. We need a real opposition, and for that this court jester has to go.
