Towers, viewed from the rail side shanties
I have often wondered about that big building in Bambalapitiya. It reads ‘Electrotek, Call The World.’ I looked up that company and can find no trace. The roof bristles with towers and antennae but I have no idea where or what the thing really is. Recently a friend visited and told me it was a government (UDA I think) housing project, torpedoed by rumors that it was tipping, now renting office space at fixed rates of like Rs. 15,000 per month. I want one.
I think it was one of Premadasa’s ill thought-out projects…
I think this is the Tower Building in Bambalapitya – take a left at the bottom of the road just past MC.
I was told it was not a finished building, just the lift core of a larger project that did not get off the ground.
There are flat and offices in this, at one time the passport office was located here.
Maybe that’s where the government keeps the thousand of journalists that have been abducted. hmm…
DEMOLISH THIS UGLY ASS BUILDING….
VAHAAAMA!!
The company still exists :) One of their major offices is in Ratmalana and they were one of the first companies to provide corporate internet connectivity (I think they still do, though ADSL has become a very strong competitor).
The antennae belong to them, dont know about the abductees in the building though.
I remember this building being built in the 80’s. It was supposed to be the tallest at that time (after Akasa Kade).
The flats were going for million(s) of Rupees or so at that time. The building being near the sea must have now corroded.
Doesn’t TNL Radio broadcast from up there?
They used to… around 10 years ago.
oh and nuke Bambalapitiya & wellawate…too many tamils there :op
No – they should be given a choice : Live in peace with the Sinhalese or piss off back to Tamil Nadu.
True, but what about those dosa kade’s i like those. Ah, a terrible conundrum
They used to indeed, they now broadcast from their 5th lane offices, but as far as I know the signal is relayed to their transmitters that are still on top of that building and then out to Colombo. Must be a bitch maintaining that stuff that close to the sea.
TNL has office space there. So does a channel call Heritage Television (shown on dialog TV). There’s some radio station as well. Plus several offices and apartments. One apartment takes up two floors. You have to enter from the marine drive entrance. The old passport office part is now used by the Civil Defence guys, I think. According to the name’s listed in the building lobby, Azath Sally has office space in the buidling (Not sure if the names are upto date though).
The TNL guys filmed the guy drowning @ bamba beach from this building.
And I think an apartment costs a lot more than Rs. 15000/=. Only one entrance per apartment, so the life does not stop on all floors. Only every 2 floors.
I’ve seen this too. Don’t know what it is but it’s just butt ugly.
Is there a brothel on the 8th floor like Liberty?
oh these Tamils living here are considered as Indian origins now are they?? and I am just wondering what the fuck they did before they were beaten the hell out & burnt alive back in 1983…you fucking racist a’holes!!
It’s you lot who initiated to divide the country…or and before you even talk about finger pointing, until these gentlemen like Zion exist (see his comment/history) we Tamils will never feel safe and look for freedom from these racist thugs!
Oh cry me a river will you? LMAO. Get the fuck back to Tamil Nadu if you can’t live in peace with the majority Sinhalese. It’s simple logic. Tamil Nadu is the homeland of the Tamils, the name itself screams TAMIL COUNTRY. So please go there if you have a problem with the Sinhalese and live out your life with your Tamil brethren.
Sinhalese aren’t out to kill Tamils, but racist bullshit like ‘go back to Tamil Nadu’ doesn’t help. This is all just ignorant and a discredit to any race. I try to maintain a basic intelligence on this blog, and inciting racial hatred is actually against Emergency Regulations. Plus common sense and decency. So everyone please chill out
I used to work at TNL Radio there crap building but we had loads of fun. It was also known as the SET building when in the good old days Sampath bank had a huge neon SET hoarding above it.
The building has seen many a colour and odour. Set bld one time, immigration and emmigration another, TNL and now I see some military office moved in, CDF (Civil Defense Force or something like it). A few government ministries can be used to fill up the building and put it to better use than it has ever been. The former Fairline Emporium building seems to be making a comeback with sampath bank moved in, likewise this building too and some of the other buildings lying idle around colombo.
