The drive into the hills
I missed my turn and somehow ended up in Mahiyangana, vaguely near Kandy. There’s a road heading south from there so I took. At the turn off to Bibile I got off for a rice and curry and was wowed to see something through the trees. There was a body of water there, beautiful and blue and pregnant with the reflection of clouds. Someone was taking a boat across. It was a beautiful place, and the road got beautifuller. Not better mind you, it’s not a good or a fast road. The scenery is just stunning. You see the cloud swathed mountains in front of you and then you’re in the mountains. It’s a nice drive.
from the side of the road
As you continue down the road there’s a canal on one side, the hills in the distance. As you start climbing the road gets more windy and you pass a sign for Dunhinda Falls. I got off to have a look, it’s just about a kilometer walk. I wouldn’t venture it in the rain, but you get wet enough from the spray anyways. Dunhinda Falls is huge and pretty awesome.
You can walk down to the falling in itself, though mind to take off your rubber slippers. I didn’t and stubbed my toe something proper. There people stand on the edge and take pictures. It’s not really swimmable, but quite nice to sit there and just get misted for a while. After that you’re up in the hills, and that’s a different set of image altogether.
Stunning!
Great! You had to visit our village also!
The tank is called Badulu oya reservoir. The road is Badulla-Mahiyanganaya highway. Very exciting place!
Indi, thanks for these travel stories and wonderful descriptions. Shame on me that I have done the same after my recent trip to Tanamaila and Ella. So much to see and experience of our own beautiful homeland!
Never been to this area, but your photo on the top makes me go their at this instance :)
