Sunrise on Kallady Beach, Batticaloa
The sun rises in the east. It warms the sea and I go for a swim. Shake off the sand, get in the car. I see it again, high over inland lakes in the afternoon. It sets a thousand meters up in the mountains, the stars near enough to pluck. This is a strange and magical country where you can be swimming in the morning and shivering by night. From this Ella hotel I can see Adam’s Peak in the distance, the hills and plains laid out like a smörgåsbord. By any whim I could be body boarding in Arugam Bay, functioning in Colombo or praying in Kataragama. This place truly is a small miracle.
The Ramayana called this the city of Lanka. Perhaps that’s the way to treat it.
