I have stayed in some shitty hotels. There was that place in Aurangabad with the mewing kittens in the hall. Then that human shelving unit in Bangalore. And that place in Jaffna with the red light so you couldn’t see the dirt. I can’t do it anymore. I randomly got some cash for sitting on a pointless panel in Kandy. I spent most of it on a decent hotel room. I never understood why anyone paid more than $10 for a room. Now I do.
There are four beds in this room. Just nikang single beds, but still. The windows open out onto a manicured garden with a lovely view of the Kandy Lake. The dining room is large, the few other guests chatty. I tried a few hotels before settling here, the Castle Hill Guest House. It’s quite nice. For future reference, the Highest View has small, overpriced rooms with poky balconies down the, IMHO, too urban Saranankara Road. The Nature Walk Resort has similarily dull and perfunctory rooms on Sangamitta Mawatha, another hotel strip.
The Castle Hill is on Rajapihilla Mawatha which is a bit isolated and has nice views of the lake. You can occasionally hear people singing karaoke at the nearby pub, but that’s it. There’s a manicured garden and only a few guests who are, in my experience, quite friendly. I thought I might have some interesting prose but I got nothing. It is nice to have a decent sleep on the road. I think I will. And did. Posting this in the morning.
