Just to note, the Daily Mirror website is now using WordPress. You can tell by doing Ctrl-U (View Source), and it mentions the version of WordPress in the header. They’re running the Revolution Magazine theme and a bunch of plugins, and overall its pretty well done. WordPress is technically blogging software, but I’ve always thought it was well suited to a variety of sites. It’s really cool that the Wijeya web team implemented WordPress on such a large scale project, and did it pretty well. My only issues with the Daily Mirror site is that the main links on the front lead to like 2 line stories, but they’ve really improved from a few years ago. It used to be static pages and paid subscribers only, but now it’s dynamic, open-source and free. Haven’t yet seen how it holds up under the bombing trafffic, but so far looks quite good, and robust under the hood.
Long live WordPress :)
Hehe I love WordPress :D
Looks ok! I did not know they were hosted in Canada!
Its bloody slow!! THey should use wp-caching and get some media temple power I guess.. Seriously its so slow! its understandable now that more db queries are going under the hood but dedicated hosting or some grid power could do a lot of good!
The latter is true, tis slow. I sent them a mail to use Super Cache or something, which they’re not
Hehe. Its funny to see today that Dailymirror is back in its old glory! Also come to think of it I wonder if they got a plan to move all the entries from their old db to the new WP based db. Coz this new wp site appears only to have articles from June! All depends on their db structure and have a good scripting guy to come up with a script to add all their old content to the new one.
Hmm… Appu suspects the Wijeya folk are crafty. They are currently running two online editions, both free, for now.
One edition (aka Online Edition) has the two line teaser stories that go nowhere and say nothing more than the headline already did.
The other edition (aka Print Edition but its also online) has more substance.
Its only a matter of time before the Print Edition goes back to a subscription only model, forcing Appu to go and borrow the paper from the uncle next door . :-(
