Frog Love And Silhouttes
One of my favorite things about Sri Lanka is the trip. I’ve never been no sheep for traveling, but it’s grown on me. There is such a diversity of climes, houses, waters and foods outside Colombo that you have to get out. Not to mention that Colombo is a physically dull city and my relationship with her is more of an arranged marriage than anything else. You know, makes the family life easier and necessary for the career. That said, I don’t really venture beyond the suburbs. Thalawathagoda, Bolgoda and Hikkaduwa (effectively). Hiks is rained out, Trinco is bombed out and Arugam Bay is back in the warzone. While it’s a huge shame that the beautiful East and delicious North are off limits, there’s still a lot of stuff within driving distance of Colombo. Negombo and Hiks for two, though this Poya we went to someone’s house in Bolgoda. Lovely pool. Frogs. Etc. These are just a few photos.

I dunno what they’re doing. They did something that looked like sex later.

HA HA , what were those humans doing, seems like sex to me
Jeez Indi – those ain’t no frogs maan – they’re a couple of warty -fucking-toads. There’s a major difference you know! Better call it ‘toad tripping’ to be more accurate.
Actually, all toads are frogs. And these little guys are clearly frogs. You can tell by their bulging eyes.
Nay! I say toads. Don’t know about the bulging eyes but the warty skin has “TOAD” written all over it. Forget the toads… what’s going on with the humans?
I looked it up and I’m pretty sure they’re toads now. I think the difference is the wartiness. And frogs taste better.
Bufo melanisticus (I think that’s how it’s spelt) to be somewhat exact…and that last picture is a very fine specimen!
nice and simple explaination here
http://allaboutfrogs.org/weird/general/frogtoad.html
This is an Asian Common Toad (it is also called by several other common names).
It is the most widely distributed amphibian in Sri Lanka.

Scientifically, it was formally referred as Bufo melanostictus but now the genus has been revised as Duttaphrynus follwing a taxanomic evaluation. This new generic name is probably made in honour of the great Indian Batrachologist (frog sicentist) Sushil K.Dutta.
See – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bufo_melanostictus
The species name ‘melanostictus’ is of greek origin with ‘melano’ meaning black and stictos meaning spotted, which refers to the numerous black spots found on its body.
Your pictures are cute.
Happy frogging!
