Durian photo by Logout
I remember last year, the area around Reid Ave started to smell like feet. It was not, in fact, feet but durian. I never really buy any, but my dad loves it and for a while the kitchen also smelled like feet. He said they used to gorge on it in university and the entire dorm would stank. The inner is kinda pasty and squish and I never really got past the smell, but some people swear by it. However, I just read that a mad Thai scientist has bred a non-stinky and still tasty durian, to limited acclaim. The durian is banned from many public areas and the Singapore subway for its odor, but many people still consider that part of its experience and, er, charm. Personally, I’d love to try a non-stinker, but I also think there’s a certain character in eating such a quirky fruit.
