All the hotspots that I know works
In a three at nine and I realize that indi.ca is messed up. Got a meeting on Galle Road but I have time to duck into McDonald’s, order an Egg McMuffin and fix the page at the counter. In the middle of the day I need to send some invoices, so I walk to The Commons and use the Suntel WoW thing, which costs money. Little buggy and credit card processing fails, but kinda works in 15 minute gasps. Enough to send some emails and drink a passion fruit. Run into Hell’s Dire Agent and he gives us a ride back to meatspace. Of course there’s no Internet in my actual office, where I’ve been exactly twice. It’s easier (and more productive) to run around Colombo all day and connect on the go. I buy like 1,000 worth of drinks and food I don’t want, but it’s well worth it. Interviewed the SunTel ISP guy and he said they got this new CDMA card that can connect anywhere. All in all, Colombo is surprisingly good for a whatsitcalled, mobile professional.
I copping this from press releases, but – “The new WiFi hotspots include McDonalds Colombo3 and Rajagiriya, The Gallery Café, The Cricket Club, The Commons Coffee House, Odel Unlimited, Excel World, Hotshots, Raffles, Il gelato, Café on the 5th, Glow & Tantra.” I personally use Macdo and Barista’s a lot (the latter which is transitioning to Suntel support I think. Also use Barefoot a lot a lot, which is run by the cafe itself. At Macdo and Barista you can walk in an Wireless Network Connections will connect, no login. Barefoot you just need to ask the office for the WEP code.
The other Hotspots are pay, like Rs 200 for 3 hours (methinks). That’s fine, I mean, I don’t have to keep ordering drinks and going to the bathroom all the time. Thing is, I would spend more than Rs 200 on food/drinks over 3 hours, but if I’m paying for the WiFi I don’t feel like I have to. Whatevs. The only problem is that SunTel’s credit card processing doesn’t work. I can enter my name but it won’t load the secure credit card processing page. Sam thinks it’s a Catch-22, that is you need to be online to pay by credit card, but you can’t go online unless you pay. However, I logged in with his prepaid card and I still couldn’t pay, so what the shit. I don’t mind paying, but I have no idea where to get that card and nor do I want to make two trips. I just want to pay with my credit card and it doesn’t work (in Commons at least).
Meh, but as to another press release, I’ve been hearing about this EV-DO in San Fran and New York which lets you connect super-fast over the cell networks, but I never thought we’d get something similar here. However, there’s this new CDMA thing which, despite being a little slower, lets you connect from almost anywhere. You buy a card for your laptop (at Excel World) and a monthly data plan from SunTel. When the invoices clear I think I’ll buy one. That should be freaking sweet. Then I can procrastinate anywhere.
