This is dumb, but I occassionally Google myself to see if I am a worthwhile human being or not. Today I have finally displaced the Irish Nutritional and Dietic Institute for the number 1 indi spot. Google top-page is fleeting so I’m keeping the screenshot. But for now indi-bindi.com and all can bite me. I should note that I have no idea how this works.
My best guess is that the secret is to make a decent website and not think about search engines. It also helps to be competing against the Beer and Potatoes society and some store that sells beads. I should note that indi.ca only gets about 250 visitors a day and is not a ‘successful’ website in those terms. I actually don’t understand why I show up on Google above more popular sites. My best guesses for Googlifying oneself are to:
1) Write interesting content
2) Use a Content Management System or Blog. Organizes your stuff.
3) Update Often
4) Use titles that could be search terms, if you really care
5) Get linked by Metafilter or Slashdot or somebody big.
Google PageRank is supposedly based on incoming links but I don’t really have that many. Most of my visitors stumble in offa Google searches. Google sends out spiders who methodically follow every link on a page, and then multiply, etc until they’ve indexed a bunch of the web. Once they find you, however, I think it’s the content that drives you. Anybody who says anything about ‘Search Engine Optimization’ is selling snake oil. If search engines could be controlled that easily then they wouldn’t work anymore.
One Indi that really should be # 1 is Indi Young. She is a brilliant Web/Software Designer from Adaptive Path, which did the excellent Blogger redesign. I get their newsletter, which always teaches me something new. Last time they put me onto the new web applications movement (AJAX), which I want to learn more about. She doesn’t seem to have blog though, hence no updates. She is, however, in my opinion the #1 Indi.
