Woman hanged over dispute
MULTAN: A married woman was hanged to death over a marital dispute in Village Jalal (Rohillanwali) in Muzaffargarh district some 65 kilometres southwest of Multan on Thursday. Police said Muhammad Sadiq married Shazia (25), who was a close relative of his stepmother, without the permission of his first wife, Bilquees. Bilquees’ brothers Mehboob and Mansoob caught Shazia when she was doing work in the fields and hanged her from a tree. —Staff Report
‘Khan displayed N-ware at fair’
VIENNA: Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, at the centre of a black market in nuclear weapons, was able to display sensitive equipment and brochures for atom bomb technology at a Pakistani arms fair, Jane’s Defence Weekly (JDW) has reported.
The Pakistani government has denied any knowledge of the black market activities of Dr Khan and the Kahuta Research Laboratories (KRL), and Dr Khan himself has insisted he had no government backing. But JDW said in its March 3 edition that the KRL had run a stall at the international arms trade fair in Karachi in November 2000, and displayed components used in the production of weapons-grade uranium.
“JDW readily obtained the brochures (for weapons-related technology) on the spot and inquired whether all of the listed items were available for sale,” said the report. “Several KRL officials provided positive assurances that all had government approval for export.”
