Fuck Hollywood, fuck Microsoft, fuck the RIAA,
fuck fuck fuck Centralized Networks.
I wrote a proposal about networks a while back. Anyways, Centralized Networks are just weak. Everything has to go through a Center Node, which puts too much strain on one point and slows everything down. It’s just bad engineering.
Right now there is one Producer (Hollywood or RIAA) serving many Consumers. Everything has to go through that one central point, which was cool for the last 50 years, but now it’s just inefficient. I’m not getting as much media as I want, plus the media sucks. Centralized Media has reached a bottleneck of 20$ CDs, 25$ DVDs, and J. Lo. Fuck that. KaZaA Lite and Soulseek, give me access to all the Music and Movies I want and I don’t have to see J. Lo unless I feel like it. These Decentralized Networks give power to people. By storing files in my Shared Folder I become both a Consumer and a Producer. KaZaA is a highly efficient distribution network cause it has 230 million Producers, so there’s no bottleneck. If we take the pressure off Central Nodes the network runs much faster. Plus I won’t have to see J. Lo so fucking much.
I’m just a faceless-nameless Consumer, but with the Net I can Produce and distribute photos, albums, and videos from home with a 4000$ investment. 2000$ Custom Computer, 600$ Phone-Cam, 1000$ Video-Camera, and a 100$ Server. USD.
That’s cheap. Producing an album usually costs thousands, and involves sucking Recording Industry dick in order to get distributed. Excuse me. Producing a Video usually costs at least 5,000$, and distributing it costs 100,000$ and up, plus Hollywood/New York dick sucking. Gigli cost 75$ million, including marketing and stuff.
To do the shit I do from home you used to have to invest millions in 1) a printing press (for writing and photography) 2) Record/CD press (for Music) 3) Film Reels, VHS/DVD presses (for video). Now I can do all that shit from my living room, and in two years I’ll be able to do it all from my Cell-Phone. I can be a Producer now, and I don’t need to just Consume all the time, and lots of people like me can and are becoming Producers. We can. Then Net is engineered for it.
If you look at the trends in Media, it’s all heading towards giving power to people. Total Request Live, and American Idol, Arab Idol, Survivor, Elimidate, Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire. These are all normal fucking idiots who get to ‘be on TV.’ People love being on TV. We’re not made to just Consume all the time.
Anyone can be a producer on the Net, and you can do it on a Local Network (friends and family), not throught the Mass Media. As the Net takes over Television functions (as in South Korea) this shit will explode, and as the Net leaves PCs and moves into Cell-Phones and Palms and Retinal Implants it’ll get awesome. I’ll be able to watch Tracy and Chris getting wasted in Chicago rather than watching strangers getting wasted on Elimidate.
People aren’t made to be just Consumers. We’re creative. We all have a lot to offer, besides our fat asses on the couch. Look at Linux, an Operating System that’s overtaking Apple and which runs my Server. Linux is Produced for free by volunteer geeks. Or look at eBay, that’s just normal dudes participating in the real free market. Or KaZaA, that’s just normal people who’ve assembled the greatest Media Library in the history of the world. So fuck the man and fuck copyright. This is a good thing.
these are some random notes i took while writing this, I don’t know if they make any sense.
Right now the Centralized System is that you have one Producer (like Hollywood) which supplies a bunch of faceless nameless Consumers. It’s a dictatorship. But fuck Hollywood. I have a videocamera and I can put Videos in my KaZaa Shared Folder and share it with the world. And fuck TV too. Video Blogs should start taking over the Reality TV Market Share in about a year.
I’m sorry to curse, but fuck Mass Media. I never watch TV. I hate ads and I don’t give a fuck about J Lo. Mass Media acts like there’s one culture that fits all, but that’s bullshit. The Net is giving Culture back to the people and it’s freeing us from being nameless-faceless Consumers.
The point of the Recording Industry was to help us listen to music. If KaZaA Lite or SoulSeek does it better, then that’s more to the point. Shit changes. You have to be willing to let go of stuff, that’s what progress is.
Drama and TV were intended to simulate reality, so Reality TV is of course better. The next step would be enabling people to share home-videos online so you can have media for and by your friends. Online Porn, has, of course led the way with Amateur Video sites… it’s only a matter of time before it enters the mainstream. I’m tired of seeing J. Lo and Ben Affleck. They’re beautiful, but they’re not my friends and I don’t really give a fuck. I’d rather see my little cousin Anuka in Sri Lanka, or see what Adam is up to in Spain. The Net and Consumer Technology is handing Media over to the people, and that’s a good thing. I can produce a TV Show in my apartment and distribute it over the Net. The tech is only getting faster and cheaper.
Mass Media will fade and Local Media will get more popular. Everything is getting Decentralized.
Having systems Decentralize is good for people, but bad for Corporations. But that’s how it is. Tech has been replacing Industry since the Industrial Revolution and textiles. The next industries that it will replace are the Music and Movie Industries. Tech can do this cause stuff like KaZaa gives power back to the people, and the people can do the job of Media distribution better than Corporations.
Open-Source. Linux and eBay are two example of what I think are Open-Source systems. They’re free, and they harness the power of the people.
If you follow Web/Tech a little bit you probably know about Linux, a free Operating-System that’s “should pass Apple in market share for desktop operating systems on computers.” Here’s an old interview with Linus, the guy who started it. It’s already a threat to Windows, especially in the Server market. My Server runs Linux, and it didn’t get fucked up by any of these viruses or nothing. Plus Linux is such good code that you can run it on a fucking toaster, or an X-Box, or Cell-Phones, or Palms.
Linux is programmed and constantly updated by 1000s of volunteer geeks all over the world, unlike Windows which waits 2 or 3 years between new releases. Linux is free. Linux is for and by people. Linux is slowly taking over.
Blogs, too, are like Open-Source writing, what with the comments and the linking.
