The Children’s James Bond

Chitty Chitty Bang BangDick Van Dyke was recently rescued by porpoises when his surfboard drifted out to sea. “I started paddling with the swells and I started seeing fins swimming around me and I thought ‘I’m dead! They turned out to be porpoises,” he said. “And they pushed me all the way to shore.” The magical actor is known for starring in movies like Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I recently rewatched the latter and was struck by the credits. It was written by Ian Fleming and produced by Albert Broccoli, the writer and producer of the James Bond franchise, respectively. It strikes me now, that the film is a bit of a kid’s Bond film, with the gadgets, the villains and the escape. The original book seems even more so. In another surprise (to me) the screenplay was written by the great author Roald Dahl.
