This is horrifying. It seems to be a serious campaign to ‘go all the way for Singapore’ by Mentos Singapore. They’ve made this insane video to encourage people (*financially secure adults in a stable, committed long-term relationships) to have sex on National Day (August 9th) and make babies. To increase Singapore’s population. The song and video is so cringe worthy, I can’t watch but then I can’t turn away.

This blog is getting a lot of traffic lately from Reddit’s Oh-lympics page (adult, ish). This is a showcase of many attractive Olympic athletes, female, including Sri Lanka’s own Christine Merrill, wherein it links to my post on the subject. Which is all good. Olympics are about the physical, in all its forms. I can’t find a similar thread on men though.
Rape and abuse are so common that you must know both victims and the perps. In India over 50% of children have faced some form of sexual abuse. In Sri Lanka 70% of women have been sexually harassed on the bus. This is happening, a lot. Personally, every girl I know has been sexually harassed and many have been assaulted or raped. And I know /know-of a few guys I consider rapists as well. I try to shun these types as much as possible, but the percentages are such that you probably know a few as well. Via Reddit, here are some stories from their side.
I’m at the Sri Lanka Unites press conference / awards show. This is for S.H.O.W. You Care, where young people boarded buses to educate against sexual harassment. They reached more than 30,000 people on 1,000 buses over 5 days. This is a major problem and I think addressing these immediate issues makes a bigger difference than, say, calling for the execution of rapists.
People are majorly concerned about the spate of rape and sexual abuse stories in the news. While many are calling for the death penalty, killing offenders isn’t an effective solution. If we put heads on stakes and the social problems remain, you haven’t really solved the problem. Plus Sri Lanka doesn’t have the ability to carry out death sentences and I don’t think rape or child abuse are generally capital offenses.
The death penalty is not a solution to the problem of rape and child abuse. It’s not an especially effective deterrent and I’m shocked that a Buddhist country is even considering it. The death penalty was reinstated in 2004 as a knee-jerk reaction to the killing of a judge. We still don’t have the executioners or the capacity to even carry out the sentence. Perfectly reasonable people are outraged at constant news of rape and child abuse, but killing isn’t an answer. Not a good one.
Of all the great apes, humans have the biggest penises. Bonobo chimpanzees have the biggest balls. What does this tell us about monogamy? Seriously, check out this short TED talk by Christopher Ryan, author of Sex At Dawn. I’m ordering the book. His point here is that humans are socially sexual, that it’s not necessarily about reproduction. Or monogamy.
Lately there’s been a spate of child killings in the news – a seven year old raped and killed in Kirulapone, a dead nine year old retarded boy found in a dirt pit in Kadawatha. There’s also been a horrific case of a 13 year old girl in Tangalle abducted and raped for days, including by local politicians and businessmen. What on earth is going on?
People complain about Game Of Thrones being rapey. They should check out the Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha. Since the case of a 13 year old being held as a sex slave there and lots of news about child abuse and rape, the pressure is on the government. Why the government? Because in many cases local government politicians have been involved, especially in Tangalle, the President’s home turf. In response Mahinda has issued one of the sadder statements ever, that alleged rapists will be suspended from the party.
